12MHA/ 13MXH -  A very elite squad.

 

In the dim and distant past of July 2009 there were loads of you.  Far too many. But in the intervening time many have fallen by the wayside: CRC; the army; private school; rehab and the dole.  Some times all of the above. I am left with a tight knit bunch of crack students who by and large do what they are asked.  Which makes a pleasant change.  It has been a delight to get to know you, talk to you and help you.  It is truly one of the best bits of the job.  That and taking my shorts off to reveal pink hot pants during induction week.  Be rest assured that will never happen again.  Good luck to those of you going to University -  and well done for going before it costs the best bit of £30K.  And to those of you not going – can’t say I blame you. Peace out suckers.  Mr H. X

Film Studies

A2 film studies saw the merging of the two AS classes led by Mr Hansard and Mr Crossan, the result was a banter filled, lively and highly creative class. The study of ‘Vertigo’ by Alfred Hitchcock prompted many an interesting debate, and the all too frequent impression of James Stewart.  The class’s short films were innovative and thought inspiring, despite the tight deadlines and tighter budgets. A series of carefully and artistically prepared small scale research projects enthralled us over the course of many lessons. The world and early cinema topics took the class away from their comfort zone, yet needless to say they proved extremely apt students.

 

Lit Class

Despite the initial trepidation of A2 literature, the class eventually and whole heartedly embraced our texts including Twelfth Night, The Pardoner’s Tale and Dr Faustus. The class also embraced Mrs Smith’s energetic teaching style and Mrs Collins’ discussions of the Albatross within the ‘Rime Of The Ancient Mariner’ lessons. Having filled our heads with critics, context and highly original ideas we progressed through the texts in the ways in which only a Lit student knows. With the exams looming, much wider reading and an ever increasing supply of sheets ensured.

On the 21^st July 2010 20 students set off on what were 9 of the longest days of their life. They endured sun, wind and rain to achieve their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award.

We walked over 120 kilometres of Lake District terrain, and started the actual expedition on the 4^th day. Here we had to walk a minimum of 8 hours a day to reach our next campsite and research a particular interest such as flooding or the local flora and forna. There were ups (eating, sleeping, finishing) and downs (arriving at the campsite to find the bridge has washed away) but all three groups got through and passed.

All of the teachers were brilliant especially Mrs Holdway, Mr McNally and  Mr Flett  who was at the forefront of organising the expedition and raised morale when we were all aching and had blisters (not to mention organised chocolate and wine for when we finished) and we were all sad to see him go.

We all had a great time and will never forget our DofE experiences, and are all glad never to have to eat tuna sachets and super noodles again.

The DofE year of 2011 has been something we are all proud of achieving and has given us skills that will always help us and most importantly has shown us that we have endurance that we weren’t sure at the start we had.

Congratulations to the Duke of Edinburgh groups of 2011 and be glad that we never have to eat tuna sachets and super noodles again!

“Earlier With skipped a year paving the way for the amply named music event ‘One Night Stand.’ Set up like a comedy act in a pub, everyone was entertained by dancing, cabaret and bands. Talents were aplenty; ‘Houseband’, Amy McGregor, Lara Ansted and Gina Connor to name a few. Even the staff joined in with the fun and games. First half aside, tables were cleared setting the stage for a pit. It was then time for the bands. Commentated throughout by the comedic genius that is Ben Cutts and his sidekick, a James Hedges cardboard cut out, One Night Stand was a year 12 highlight for the masses.”
